The squared formation, marching and firing in ranks was highly successful all over the world and used by every European nation with a large Army prior to the adoption of rifled barrels. This is because less accurate muskets required shorter ranges to be effective. This means that on a condensed battlefield the black powder weapons used at the time would generate smoke clouds that would obscure an individual soldiers view of the battlefield and the enemy. If soldiers fighting a pitched battle were scattered about seeking cover, fighting alone or even in squad sized units they would quickly become disoriented making their individual shots mostly useless as they would have no idea where the enemy or even their fellow soldiers were located. For musket fire to be really effective required "Volley fire" which had entire ranks firing simultaneously into the enemy formation whose location was known as they were either standing in ranks firing back or marching towards them. If your guys simply continued to volley fire in the same direction as they initially began shooting they had the best chance at hitting the enemy in an environment so densely clouded by smoke that you could not actually see the enemy to aim at them. It looks crazy to us now because obviously such tactics when using accurate weapons that fire in semiautomatic or fully automatic modes and use smokeless powder would lead to a slaughter. But at the time these tactics were cutting edge as they were developed around the strength and weaknesses of the weapons and communications technology of that era. As far as the red uniforms, because of the way battles were fought the color of uniform made no difference. If you have to be close enough to hit with muskets then you could most likely see your enemy regardless of clothing. And remember they were firing muzzle loading weapons that required a fair bit of moving around to reload, reloading quickly required a standing or kneeling position. It doesn't matter how you camouflage yourself, if you're moving around, standing up or kneeling you're going to be seen. These tactics and uniforms were effective against the most powerful Armies in the world for a couple hundred years, so for the time they weren't quite as stupid or silly as they appear. The problem is you're viewing things through a modern context nearly 250 years later which tends to make any aspect of human history look stupid, bad, or silly.

Andy Wilman is an amazing producer, he’s one of those people that notices absolutely everything. Jeremy himself is no slouch on the production side of things either. He had a big hand in editing and refining the end result. He’s also a remarkably nice chap, which a few people struggle to believe. Don’t confuse people’s TV persona with actual personality.

Producer was on a power trip and using his work environment as a shield. People not getting punched enough has allowed narcissistic wankers to flourish.
